Where in the world are we now?

Take a look at our route that we created with TravelMap to see where we have taken Timone & Pumba.
Largely by chance, we arrived in South Africa at the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. Luckily we made it to our resting place on the coast with our family. For that, we are truly thankful and look forward to reflecting on our experiences of our year-overland and seeing where the road takes us next.

Aboard Jamala
While we were on the Kenyan Coast in Kilifi, we met our now friend, Captain James who needed crew to sail to Pemba. Pemba is a small island located in the Zanzibar Archipelago, north of the oh-so-popular Unguja Island. We had been looking to do some travel aboard a sailing vessel, so it took very little convincing to get us onboard. Within a few short days of meeting one another, we were out at sea with our sights set on the small island in Tanzania. To put it lightly, it was a sail of a lifetime! Sleeping onboard Jamala is something we will not soon forget. Below is a rough outline of where we sailed and the part of the island that we saw.
So Far…

On the Horizon…
A major component of our trip planning is spontaneity. Very little of our route is preplanned. We make decisions based on word of mouth from fellow ‘overlanders’ and locals that we meet along the way. This allows us to explore locations truly off the beaten track, outside of the major tourist circuits. Travelling in this way gives us the opportunity to meet people and support communities that may otherwise not reap the benefits of the tourism industry. And better still, we develop more meaningful relationships with the places and people that we visit.
With the sudden change in global affairs regarding Covid-19, our trip didn’t come to an end in quite the way we imagined. However, if we learned anything over the past year, it is that no matter the amount of time that you have, there are endless places to explore, people to meet and lessons to be learned. What does that mean for us? Whether on the road or staying stationary, there is always an adventure to be had!
